| The FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine regulates the manufacture and distribution of food additives and drugs that will be given to animals. These include animals from which human foods are derived, as well as food additives and drugs for pet (or companion) animals. The agency publishes a variety of "Small Entity Compliance Guides" on subjects including prohibited proteins, labeling requirements, and other topics.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) enforces the Colorado Feed Law to promote truth and fairness in the sales of livestock feed and pet food. Producers and pet owners are protected from the sale of adulterated and misbranded products.
The CDA Feed Program oversees inspection, sampling and analysis of feeds to verify nutrient claims and to ensure that adulterants such as mycotoxins are not present. Livestock and pet food manufacturing companies must register yearly. Labels are reviewed for accuracy and completeness. Distribution fees must be paid on commercial feed distributed in Colorado.
- Registration: Commercial feed companies must be registered yearly (February thru January).
- Small (10 lb or less) package listing: Products must be listed with the Feed Program (February thru January).
- Fee, distribution: A distribution fee & report are due yearly (January thru December).
- Analysis: Nutrient and other required guarantees must be met when a product sample is analyzed.
- Labels: Nutrient and other claims and identifying information must be true and complete.

| "Feed for Livestock" meaning all materials which are distributed as feed or for mixing with feed for domestic farm and ranch animals such as cattle, sheep, swine, goats, llamas, rabbits, horses, and poultry is exempt from state sales tax. Livestock does NOT include dogs, cats, birds or other animals kept as pets for pleasure or recreation. (39-26-114.6, C.R.S.) |
