| HOSPITAL: a health institution planned, organized, operated and maintained to offer facilities, beds and services over a continuous period exceeding twenty-four hours to individuals requiring diagnosis and treatment for illness, injury, deformity, abnormality, or pregnancy. Clinical laboratory, diagnostic X-ray and definitive medical treatment under an organized medical staff shall be provided within the institution. Treatment facilities for emergency and surgical services shall be provided within the institution or by contractual agreement for those services with another licensed hospital. Services provided by contractual agreement shall be documented by a well-defined plan for the provision of contracted services, related to community needs. Definitive medical treatment may include obstetrics, pediatrics, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, X-ray therapy, and similar specialized treatment.

All specialized units operate under state and federal regulations. Health care entities may operate as specialty hospitals, including rehabilitation and psychiatric hospitals or centers. |
| TRAUMA SYSTEM: All Colorado hospitals with an emergency room are part of Colorado's trauma system and must be continuously available to treat injured persons. |
