First-time applications for certification as a Colorado Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) must:
- Be 18 years of age
- Establish lawful presence in the United States
- Be a graduate of an EMT initial training course at the requested level, and be currently certified by the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) –OR– an out-of-state applicant currently certified by the NREMT. Information on the NREMT is available at www.nremt.org
- Submit to a Colorado Bureau of Investigation and/or Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal history background check depending upon length of residency in Colorado. Colorado state-recognized EMT education training centers can provide guidance in completing education requirements for Colorado EMT certification.
