Transportation & Logistics
Colorado’s transportation and logistics industry is enabled by multimodal transportation infrastructure elements that are privately and publicly owned and operated. The transportation system consists of major state and federal highways, local roadways, freight and passenger railroads, private and public transit systems, airports, and pedestrian and bicycle facilities.
Colorado is the crossroads of major Interstate Highways (I-25, I-70 and I-76), and has numerous state and federal highways that serve a critical function in supporting interstate commerce. Local roadways, scenic byways, and pedestrian and bicycle facilities are important for local commerce, tourism and recreation across Colorado.
The two Class I railroads that operate in Colorado — BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad — together own and operate on more than 2,000 miles of track in the state. The 12 short line railroads comprise over 600 miles of track in the state and primarily provide localized service for the food and agriculture industry with connections to the Class I railroads. Nearly one-fourth of all freight handled in Colorado is moved via rail. More than half of the commodities carried on the rail is coal from Wyoming destined for Texas and states east of Colorado.
With 14 commercial airports, including Denver International Airport (the nation’s 5th busiest airport), and 60 general aviation airports across the state, aviation is the sound of commerce. Colorado’s commercial and general aviation airports are major economic catalysts. Airports provide the connectivity to worldwide markets and destinations, something that is essential to Colorado’s rapidly expanding business community and our world reknown tourist destinations.
With North America's longest commercial runway, DIA offers nonstop service to almost two dozen international locations including destinations in Europe, Asia, Canada, Mexico, and Central America. With international passenger traffic increasing, there's also significant potential for new daily nonstop international flights.
